Links: other radical bookshops

We aim to co-operate and promote other radical bookshops. There was once a golden age of radical bookshops when almost every town if not village had it's own outlet for progressive political material. Sadly the depredations of the major book chains have wiped out most independent bookshops over the last twenty years. Those of us who are left need your support to keep going. Some shops are listed below. If you are a radical bookshop and wish to be listed here or any other symbiosis please e-mail andy@housmans.com.

Freedom BookshopFreedom Press bookshop is Britain's largest anarchist bookshop, stocking thousands of books, newspapers and pamphlets on history to sex, philosophy to workers' struggles, fiction to anti-fascism. They also have a range of political t-shirts, CDs, posters and videos.

They have large amounts of free materials, and a small second-hand section with low low prices! The bookshop is open Monday to Saturday 12pm till 6pm but it probably makes sense to give them a ring first on 020 7247 9249.

The bookshop is in Angel Alley, 84b Whitechapel High Street, London E1 7QX. The alley is next to the KFC near Aldgate East tube, Whitechapel Art Gallery exit.If you'd like to volunteer to help out in the shop, please email shop@freedompress.org.uk

The 56a Infoshop is a volunteer-run, 100% unfunded DIY-run social centre in Walworth, South London. They are celebrating 15 years in Elephant and Castle with a party on Friday 27th June. Quoting from their web site www.56a.org.uk

"We are a resource for local people, campaign groups and projects as well as selling books, zines, music and t-shirts. We have an extensive radical archive of international info with hundreds if not thousands of publications that we have saved over the last 14 years of being open.

We are part of a larger Social Centres Network in London and part of a global network of Infoshops, autonomous spaces, projects & people dreaming and working for a better world."

We are an independent community bookshop based in the Portswood area of Southampton - see map for our location. We are a not-for-profit co-operative - any money we make is ploughed back into the business. Our opening hours are 9am-6pm Monday-Saturday.

Books We stock a wide range of general books for adults and children, as well as our speciality areas (such as social issues, adoption, humanities and political issues - see books for more information.)

Fast ordering of books not in stock At no extra cost to you, we can order any book in print in the UK, the US or Europe. We can get most books in less than a week (we get 75% within 3 days) although difficult-to-obtain ones can take a few weeks. You can either call into the shop to order, or order by phone. When your book arrives, we will contact you to let you know, and you can pick it up at the shop. Alternatively, we can post it to you, although we do have to add extra to cover our postage costs. Sorry, but we don't have any on-line ordering facilities on this website.

Price reductions We have price reductions throughout the shop, which change every month. Call into the shop to see our offers.

But we're more than just a bookshop... We also sell audio books, stamps, Fairtrade goods, alternative magazines, greeting cards, humorous and political postcards, T-shirts with alternative messages, wall charts (veggie nutrition, healing herbs, first aid, yoga), diaries & calendars, stationery, and NEW!: Environmental cleaning products. We produce national/international mail-order books catalogues for two of our specialist areas: Adoption Books (catalogue currently being updated) and Vegan Books. We have Semester 1 and semester 2 Southampton University Avenue Campus Bookstalls. We also offer bookstall services for events.

The links listed below are based on the range of periodical titles on sale in Housmans bookshop. Hard to find & with perspectives frequently unavailable in the mainstream media, a range of viewpoints - pacifist, libertarian, anarchist, green, socialist, marxist, trotskyist and more - are represented in a broad range of 'left field' opinion, review and research journals. We also stock some magazines on philosophy, literature, music and the arts.

Please feel welcome to come and browse to your heart's content. We're not able to send out individual issues or set up subcription but will send out sample selections coming to over £5 plus post if you send us a list of what you fancy.
