News from Campaign Against Climate Change, whose offices are here above Housmans Bookshop…..
It’s official: 2015 shattered global heat records. Just 10% of that excess heat was attributed to El Niño – and 90% to climate change.
It’s Time to Act on climate change – here are some events coming up in February and beyond:
Solidarity with the Heathrow 13! These brave activists have been told that they are likely to face prison sentences for their protest last summer blocking Heathrow’s north runway to protest against aviation expansion. If you are able, please join us on the morning of Wednesday 24th February when sentences will be announced. Facebook event
If you can’t make it, send messages and pictures of solidarity via Twitter (#Heathrow13 @PlaneStupid), Facebook or email email@example.com
Going Backwards on Climate Change – Protest 8 May. Help us raise awareness of the damage caused by the government’s backtracking on climate change (find out more here) by joining us in a fun, creative protest – walking backwards down Whitehall on the one year anniversary of their election. There are obviously opportunities to mark this anniversary outside London too – we’ll be producing resources to help groups elsewhere hold meetings, stalls or even their own ‘backwards’ stunt…
Show your love for the planet and break up with fossil fuels this Valentines Day! The Climate Coalition have launched a new short film starring Jeremy Irons and Maxine Peake, based on a letter by Michael Morpurgo from a grandfather to his granddaughter. There’s a teaching pack which goes with the film for KS2 English classes (ages 9-11) and more about Show the Love and green hearts (good for craftivists!) here.
On Valentines Day last year UKYCC reminded us why that relationship with fossil fuels was going nowhere… This year Divest London are holding an event on Sunday February 14th focused on City Hall ‘Divest to Stay Afloat‘ (there’s a Making Day the day before).
There are other divestment events planned around the country. Why not mark the occasion by doing a bit of personal housekeeping: switching your bank account to an ethical option or your electricity provider to a renewable-powered option like Good Energy or Ecotricity? And by the way, we have a partnership arrangement with Good Energy – if you use this link when you sign up as a new customer, CCC gets £30!
Best wishes and solidarity
